Targeted Career Support

  • Targeted Ala Carte Products & Services
I'm often asked if I can simply write a resumé or help with a presentation or business plan of some similar career support project. The short answer is yes. And, I've compiled a listing to illustrate some of those more common requests.

If you need assistance with these types of products or services, I would be pleased to discuss the the opportunity to help you.

What Resume is right for you, Functional, Chronological, a Combination or Blend?
It's time to burn your CV and start over with a document that doesn't just tell readers where you've been but, more importantly, tells them how much  you've accomplished in your career and what new career path you're following.

If you're serious about a nonclinical career, the first major change you must make in presenting yourself is to ditch your CV and replace it with a your personal marketing document.... that's another way to describe your resumé.

However, which resume is right for you? Functional Resume, Chronological Resume, Combination Resume/CV, Synopsis of Resume, Supplement to Resume....  Different types of jobs will require different types of information. However, every resume type requires one consistent set of elements... it has to tell people not just what you've done and where you've been, but the value of your life's work.

Need Help With a Networking Pitch?
Networking is both art and science. The art is much like examining a patient. The more you do it the more comfortable you become and the better you get. The science, however, is having a defined set of best practices you always follow to position yourself in the right way at the right time, and to control your networking focus.

The very best sales people in the world would never call a new client prospect without a fully drafted phone script. But I talk with physicians every day who think "just winging it" is fine when they want to inquire about a job opening they've seen online. It hasn't worked, has it?

A solid Networking Package - and that's what you have to have, consists of your Stump Speech, a Phone Script and a Professional Business Card. To develop your Networking Package we'll meet two to three times. Our first meeting will really be an interview... I want to know who you are, what you've done, what you want to do, and how you see or define your skills. From this meeting I will draft your initial Stump Speech. Plus, I'll add the question every physician is asked, "why do you want to leave clinical practice." That's ok, you don't need to answer that one, I'll do it for you.

You and I will then meet again to review the first draft, edit, and redraft. Once we agree on the final draft, I'll convert your Stump Speech to a Phone Script, and send you a draft business card - it will not have a place for an appointment on the back, but it will reflect the key items from your Stump Speech. With you're approval I'll order the cards (250) for delivery to your home or office. Our final meeting will focus on use of both your Stump Speech and Phone Script as well as some other meeting, networking and interviewing tips.

Do you need Emails/Letters of Introduction, a Cover Letter for Your Resume?
Whether you use email or snail mail, you need to set the stage for networking conversations.

With your correspondence package I'll provide custom email/letter copy you can use to introduce yourself, ask for networking meetings or modify for use as a resume submission cover letter. Plus I'll provide you with the template signature for all your business emails and provide some useful tips on follow up messaging and thank you's.

We'll meet two to three times so I may collect initial information to create a first draft, then again for review and edits, and then the final documents.

Does Your Business (or Business Idea) Need a Web Presence?
In today's markets business creation is instantaneous and virtual and web storefronts are constantly changing based on customer wants and perceptions. Most of my clients' businesses are located virtually and are based on their intellectual capital. If that describes your business, you need a well crafted web site to help sell your services. You web site package developed by third_Evolution will be between three and five pages. It is designed to help you open the door of your new business.

What I'll do: I'll meet with you to collect the necessary information to build pages, draft copy, collect images, discuss names, colors and logo's and create the initial web structure and template. My personal business perspective is that solo or small-business entrepreneurs need to be in control of their storefronts, so I'll construct your web so you can make changes, if you wish. However, you will own all the contents, domain names, etc... so if in time you want to turn it over a web development company, it will be easy to do.

My development focus will be on:

  • Your business description and value proposition
  • Your product or products
  • Your qualifications
  • Contact capabilities
  • Commentary Section or Blog

Do You Need To Manage Your Social Media Presence?
The critical question doctor is do you control your own professional image, and is it the image of who and what you aspire to?

LinkedIn® is not your CV. Think about that.... does your LinkedIn page, assuming you have one, look like your CV or does it present you as a multifaceted person with many interests and accomplishments that reflect your true nonclinical aspirations?

LinkedIn and other social media personal pages tries to make it easy for people to enter the right information, their job titles, places of employment and other key identifying data. However, sometimes that information represents a backward-looking perspective and fails to present your more forward looking objectives.

In your Social Media Makeover we'll discuss the options open to you as well as the right way to present yourself to the market you're wishing to enter. We'll also discuss advertising and promotional options that exist with social media, and how to participate and create a presence and followers - all intended to elevate your social media profile while keeping you in control of content and presence.

Do You Need an Executive Presentation?
The first step in most consulting engagements is an executive level presentation. Are you ready?

I'm sure you've made presentations before. Whether at grand rounds, representing pharma companies, and community education. But, those were presentations for a very different purpose than an executive level presentation to introduce yourself, your company, your services for a consulting engagement. Read Guy Kawasaki's book, Art of the Start, and you'll learn the basis and background for many different types of business presentations. Or, work with me and I'll build the right presentation - I follow Guy's guidelines, for you and your situation.

Nobody's Going to Die...: …and other conventional wisdom of nonclinical careers for physicians (Physicians Guide to NonClinical Careers)

Really, nobody is going to die. That's the major difference between day to day medical practice versus what most of the rest of us do for a living. At it's core, that represents a major sea change in thinking and acting for physicians. Learning to take chances, acting on intuition, and promoting your expertise are alien acts for most physicians in practice. In the nonclinical world, they spell not only survival but being able to excel. In the nonclinical world, they are simply conventional wisdom.

In this book learn what to say when you really don't know the answer and how to take control of nearly any meeting. Understand the key drivers to decision-making and understand now to navigate the delicate dance of job change and job advancement.

Following the Compass Points to Your NonClinical Career: The Physicians' Guide to NonClinical Careers (Physicians Guide to NonClinical Careers)

Career change for physicians is not as simple as completing online applications or sending your resume to a few recruiters. No, physician career change is actual career change, not job change. And for physicians who have changed practices before, you'll find this process very different as well.

Nonclinical career transition is a process, not an event, and it's a process that when done well follows steps similar to your treatment of your patients. You can't treat without a diagnosis, followed by detailed treatment planning and then implementation and management to a successful outcome. It's the same process, just with different tools and objectives. I'll show and tell you how to do it successfully so you're better prepared to create a new career in which you can be both happy and successful, not just taking any job that may become available.

What you'll learn...
  1. The critical elements of self diagnosis. You'll follow a SOAP note. Now, doesn't that make sense?
  2. Treatment planning means developing your marketing and personal branding materials. It also means learning how to use your materials to present yourself as a valuable expert rather than as just another job seeker.
  3. And you'll find treatment implementation and management is focused on a single objective, to place you in the same room, literally or virtually, with the people you want to be working with... to afford you the opportunity to discuss and present your value to them as a problem solver they need and want.
The Physicians Guide to Nonclinical Careers, Following the Compass Points to Your NonClinical Career, is the third edition of my step by step guide that for more than a decade has helped physicians better define, guide and manage their successful transitions from clinical practice to happy, successful and rewarding nonclinical careers.
